USS New York was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the
World Trade\u00a0 Center <\/i><\/b>
<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It is the\u00a0 fifth in a new class of warship –
designed for missions that\u00a0 include special
operations against terrorists.\u00a0 It will carry a\u00a0
crew of 360 Sailors and 700 Combat-Ready Marines
to be\u00a0 delivered ashore by helicopters and
assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted
down in a foundry in Amite, LA, to
cast the ship’s bow section.\u00a0 When it\u00a0 was poured
into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, ‘those big rough\u00a0
steelworkers treated it with total reverence,’
recalled Navy Capt.\u00a0 Kevin Wensing, who was there.
<\/i><\/b><\/span>
‘It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.’
<\/i><\/b><\/span>
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that
when the trade center steel first arrived, he
touched it with his hand and the ‘hair on my
neck stood up.’\u00a0 ‘It had a big meaning to it for\u00a0
all of us,’ he said.\u00a0 ‘They knocked us down.\u00a0 They
can’t keep us\u00a0 down.\u00a0 We’re going to be back.’
