Lee leading his defeated Confederates back toward Virginia on July 4.\u00a0 23,000 Union soldiers lost their lives and 28,000 Confederate soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing in this one battle.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2586\" alt=\"Penn. monument. Wounded in the legs, he made his way home where he was left in peace by Confederate occupiers of the town. Burns became a national hero after the battle and was the first resident of the town that President Abraham Lincoln stated he wished to meet during his trip to dedicate the Soldiers&#8217; National Cemetery that November.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #025278;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">National Park Service<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>At the cemetery&#8217;s dedication, President Abraham Lincoln followed the two-hour-long, featured speech of orator Edward Everett.\u00a0 Having been asked for &#8220;a few appropriate remarks,&#8221; with just 272 words, spoken in two minutes, Lincoln&#8217;s speech immediately found a permanent place in American history (<span style=\"color: #025278;\">the full text appears below<\/span>).\u00a0 The two speakers commemorated the lives of the soldiers who fought and died there, dedicating their final resting place as one of the first national cemeteries in our nation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ourlibertyundergod.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Stone-wall-on-Cemetery-Ridge-divides-Union-and-Confederate-Monuments.bmp\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2581\" alt=\"Stone wall on Cemetery Ridge divides Union and Confederate Monuments\" src=\"https:\/\/ourlibertyundergod.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Stone-wall-on-Cemetery-Ridge-divides-Union-and-Confederate-Monuments.bmp\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #025278;\"><em><strong>Stone wall on Cemetery Ridge divides Union and Confederate Monuments<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/span><em>National Park Service<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>President Lincoln invoked the original words and ideals of the <a title=\"Declaration of Independence\" href=\"https:\/\/ourlibertyundergod.com\/?page_id=101\">Declaration of Independence<\/a> in commemorating the most important battle fought in the American Civil War.\u00a0 He ended by declaring to the world,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #025278;\"><strong>&#8220;. . . <strong>that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, <\/strong>that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>~<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Now we are engaged in a new struggle to preserve this nation under God, against the forces imposing a fundamental transformation destroying our liberty while building a government designed to establish tyranny over the minds, bodies, and souls of all Americans.\u00a0 They seek to enslave us and our posterity, using the evil &#8220;promise&#8221; of a fictitious, impossible &#8220;collective body.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>It is our noble and righteous task to thwart their plans by spreading truth to our Fellow-Americans by God&#8217;s gracious will; to renew that immortal Declaration of Independence and our Liberty under God, and to restore our <a title=\"United States Constitution\" href=\"https:\/\/ourlibertyundergod.com\/?page_id=187\">Constitution<\/a> and <a title=\"The Bill of Rights.
